Our new president Florian introduced the first meeting of the new committee year and then handed over to Dennis, who jumped into the Toastmaster role until Joy could take over. In the spirit of the evening, Joy’s introduced the theme of firsts, e.g. first pet, first job, which made for some good material to introduce speakers to the stage. Dennis reminded us that part what we learn when we do public speaking is to try not showing how nervous we are – after all, everyone feels those butterflies in the stomach when they’re performing.
Chistopher, the evening’s Grammarian, introduced “aplomb” as the word of the day, for speaker’s to try to fit in their speeches. Then came the prepared speeches, first by Mikhail, the new VP of Education, who gave us his first ever speech here at SPS, telling us about his public speaking and Toastmasters journey, a story which we hope will galvanise some of the evenings new guests to come back and pursue their own Toastmasters journey.
Florian gave the second speech of the evening, focusing on his ideas for the year ahead for SPS. As Florian reminded us, we are the only club in the City of London which is open to the public, and we should try to build a structure as amazing as the Church of St Paul’s that we are named after, hopefully getting some of our members into district competitions.
There were some insightful evaluations by James and by Helen. Then the table topics kicked off with a serious of extremely difficult questions, such as whether to save your dying father or dying life partner! There were some excellent contributions from some of our guests, one of whom, Peter, won it.
Michael did a thorough evaluation of the table topics participants, and lastly, Ellie was kind enough to give us her time as a Toastmaster from another club to give a skilful general evaluation of the evening.
